Good morning, I will try and write this intro bit without sounding like a wannabe documentary voice-over guy, but it’s not easy when writing seriously about the music industry. I just had to delete the word ‘legendary’. Here goes…
For twenty years, Eat Your Own Ears have been putting on shows and events in London by music’s best left-of-centre talent, forging particularly strong relationships with Four Tet, James Yorkston and Caribou to name just a few of dozens of artists whose shows they promote. For a couple of years, EYOE’s main man Tom Baker has also teamed up with Lucy Pitkethly for a string of releases on their Eat Your Own Ears Recordings.
Two weeks ago, Tom and Lucy put out - oh god, I’ll just paste the line from the press release - “a limited edition double eco vinyl compilation album, featuring cuts from Four Tet, Mount Kimbie, Ride, and Arab Strap, alongside brand new tracks from Falle Nioke and recently-reformed shoegazers Cranes. Plus a hidden gem from Caribou.” Check out Robert Smith’s mix of Ride’s Vapour Trail, from their 1990 debut album Nowhere.
Tom Baker generously agreed to answer our Lost In Music questionnaire, offering insights about his journey into music, his work with Eat Your Own Ears and Field Day festival, as well as the compilation. You can listen to it while you read:
Enjoy the edition and we’ll see you on Friday for who knows what,
Ted and Niall.
