Recommender Pt. 1

Ted Kessler

The best song of this or any week is I Like Beer by “Aussie punk legends”, Cosmic Psychos, a band I’d previously never heard of. It’s hard to know how a song or music video can improve on this (though the most-played tune on their Spotify page is Nice Day To Go To The Pub: also a banger). There’s one lyric on I Like Beer - “I like beer, really like beer” - until around two minutes into its three minutes it changes for four bars to “I like beer ‘cos it makes me smart/I like beer ‘cos it makes me fart…” Then back to “I like beer, really like beer”. Sometimes, you just need to be reminded why you fell in love with music in the first place. What a song, what a video. Can’t wait to get stuck into the album, I Really Like Beer.

Yesterday, I got a text from a number I did not recognise. All that was in the message was a Spotify link. If I pressed the link, would all my bank details be phished? Then, another text: ‘Jimi Goodwin x’. A third text revealed that Jimi had gotten my number from his Doves PR – hope that’s cool; it is – and just wanted to pass on a record he was into as he thought I’d dig it too. It’s Trellion & Danny Lover’s Ok, the fire. It’s brilliant, head-nodding cough-syrup and weed rap, a collaboration between two MCs from Ontario, Canada and Sheffield, England respectively that is highly melodic, original, easy-paced and moreish, like Bon Iver if that was a rap act. So, Jimi was right. It came out earlier in the summer, in June, and I missed it then, but I wouldn’t want anyone else to miss out now. Jimi also says that “NightjaR 2 shaping up nicely”, so that’s some breaking news.
